“Little Self Indulgent” is the final single of 2024 from British Columbia’s Western Jaguar (aka Jeffrey Trainor).
Continuing where he left off with Vacationland earlier in the year – which, in our opinion, is one the best albums of 2024 – his new tune brings the bass to fore but holds onto the tried-and-tested blend of lush, chimey guitar lines, pounding drums and introspective lyrics.
This would’ve fit perfectly on Vacationland with its many references to regret, palpable sense of self-awareness and bubbling anxiety. However, on Little Self Indulgent it feels a little bit like the shackles have come off, with Jeffrey’s vocal at times sounding a little more unhinged and erratic than normal; in the best possible way. With the added edge to his delivery on this track, he adds another string to his already very impressive bow.
Trainor is a songwriter who has unequivocally hit his stride. His now signature sound is comfortingly familiar and easy to love, but still capable of surprising you. Here’s hoping this talented multi-instrumentalist is closing out 2024 with how he intends to continue in 2025.
