Raleigh, North Carolina’s Rock and Roll genre tourists have a new album releasing in February, and in advance of that album they released a new single, titled Breakfast Schmeckfast. While they often dabble in everything from punk to country, from folk to Grunge, this time they decided to reach into ska, and I had little choice but to check it out and give it a listen and review.
To their credit, the music feels consistent with many modern ska bands, as in, it definitely has some upstrokes, includes some horns, it’s fairly catchy, and it doesn’t get hung up on the rules of genre playing more into rock and punk while returning to ska themes for the beginning of the verses. I’ll even give more credit for being sure to hit anti-capitalist messaging in the song.
However, the band also touts their lyrical themes that range from existential to absurd, and they manage to cover quite the wide range in this song. From corporate murder and bomb threats to WalMart to masturbation, and sex toys, the song doesn’t seem to be much more than an exercise in stream of consciousness writing with a rhythm. The final line in the chorus of “after my breakfast I will eat my lunch” feels like it was written by the same guy who wrote Rebecca Black’s Friday, as far as just stating mundane actions.
Overall, there is plenty to enjoy about the song, it’s good if you just want to jam to something catchy, and the 4 singles available for the album are all worth checking out, and I love that they pull from so many different sources for their music.
