Single: The Foxgloves – Her Silent Ways

The Foxgloves return with a bit of a stylistic departure from their previous work – one of our favourite EPs of last year – The Car Beside The Road. “Her Silent Ways” is softer and perhaps slightly slicker than their previous offerings, but no less enjoyable.

This is a hazy slice of well-crafted dreampop. The song structure is still slightly obscured by the wall of sonics that surround it – but in a different way to the shoegazey/post-punk influenced tunes they’ve put out before.

It starts subtly – we’re reminded of Mazzy Star – and it is almost cute or twee in its gentle nature. But as we sit with it for a while and the song progresses, we’re eventually engulfed by what feels like a whirlpool of guitars and choral, high-pitched, layered vocals and we’re now firmly in My Bloody Valentine territory.

It’s a bit of a chameleon of a song really. It’s what you want it to be, when you need it to be it. It serves many purposes and it serves them very well. It could soundtrack an emotional scene in a film or TV show. It could accompany a long drive. It can be added to your “totes emosh” playlist for when you need to have a little cry. It can bring you down or it could lift you up. And that, dear friends, is the beauty of music.

In our opinion, The Foxgloves are one of the most exciting young British bands around we can’t wait to see what else they come up with in 2025.
