Surf Wax is an enchanting bedroom surf pop project led by the talented Cooper Kelley, hailing from the vibrant scene of Kansas City. Originally born as a solo endeavor, Cooper meticulously crafted and recorded his music in solitude. However, the project has now evolved into a full-fledged band, featuring the dynamic talents of Chaney Butner on drums, Mackenzie Ballew on bass guitar, and Dan Camino on lead guitar.
Their latest single marks a significant shift, as it was recorded collaboratively as a tightly-knit unit. This fresh track exudes the lively essence of energetic slacker surf rock, enveloping listeners in an atmosphere brimming with positive vibes and a distinct summertime feel. However, beneath the upbeat sound lies a poignant narrative, as the lyrics reflect Cooper’s deep struggles with his father’s battle against cancer and his feelings of regret about living far away.
Interestingly, I found an unexpected connection with the song, especially while sipping my cup of weekend coffee. The music seemed to resonate with my own experiences, bringing an added layer of meaning to the track. I was thoroughly impressed by the catchy guitar riffs and the vibrant surf-inspired energy that the song radiated. It’s truly a fantastic, invigorating piece that leaves you feeling uplifted.
