Sounding like a Chinese Public Service Broadcasting blended with Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai, Summer Fades Away are back with Endless – their first album in 13 years.
Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day is the third single taken from it and it is a poetic post-rock pilgrimage to parts not commonly traversed.
The spoken word lyrics are in a language that we at Kinda Grizzly don’t speak (presumably Mandarin or Cantonese) but these guys clearly speak the universal language of rocking the fuck out.
As is often the case with the post-rock genre, the song builds gradually, in parts. It starts and it is as tender as the day is long. It sounds like it could soundtrack a timelapse video of a flower blooming in a nature documentary. But in time, it develops and blooms into a blazing forest fire of a thing. The song positively drips with emotion and atmosphere and is a formidable work of art.
Not unlike the recent work of one of our favourites – Nikolay Pashkovets – this Changsha quintet tell a story you don’t need to be able to understand, to understand.
The new album was available to order on beautiful coloured vinyl from their Bandcamp but is now sadly sold out, CD versions remain available.
