Single: Space Monkey Mafia – Linear Time

Space Monkey Mafia put out their debut album in 2018. In 2022 they followed it up with a second full length album and have dropped a small handful of singles in the two years since. On September 7th they officially dropped their newest single, “Linear Time”, and with it the announcement that this is the first single off of their upcoming third full length album.

“Linear Time” is a song about grief and loss and the procession of time going forward while you try to catch your breath and grieve the loss of a loved one. The song is flawlessly executed, and manages to capture both the sadness of gravity of dealing with loss and pain and being forced to move on with your life and also delivering a ska song that doesn’t feel out of place dealing with the subject. We are provided outstanding performances on the bass and guitar, and horn lines that don’t feel out of place in a song about grief.

Space Monkey Mafia is doing an amazing job writing mature powerful ska songs. While the subject matter of this song is unique tk the song, the musical themes of the song are not too far from those of their last album and it feels like a natural procession of their music- and their last album was one of my top albums of 2022. I don’t assume that all of the songs on this upcoming album will deal with such heavy subject matter but I do expect that whatever the rest of the album is about it will be executed flawlessly, with a punch of alt rock and punk mixed in with ska and a maturity that makes you want to listen and appreciate the music as much ad you want to get to your feet and dance.
