Single: slang – gnat

With a sound that seems to combine the methodical, melodic approach of slowcore legends Low and noisemongers like My Bloody Valentine – Jackson, TN’s Slang are quite the combination of elements.

Gnat is 180 seconds of quiet/loud shoegazey goodness. The hallmarks are all here – walls of guitars, obscured far-away sounding vocals. But there’s also an almost psychedelic element to the swirling guitars that leaks through the perfectly crafted haze; as well as aspects of indie/alt rock thrown in for good measure – not unlike contemporaries Hotline TNT.

Gnat is infectious and burrows its way into your brain and I must say, the production is astounding. The song shimmers and shines in a way that is just right. Not overly produced, but far from amateurish sounding – this is right in the sweet spot. It’s nu-gaze for the new age.

Shoegaze is in a great place at the moment and has been for some time now. Young bands the world over are flying the fuzzy flag again and it feels great. And with bands like Slang producing songs of this kind of excellent quality, it’s surely here to stay.
