Petalwave might well be the name of this new Michigan five-piece, but it could equally describe the new floriferous rock genre and sound they are carving out for themselves as a group. Combining elements of classic, fuzzy mid-noughties indie with more nineties-sounding emotional grunge, a glittering or shoegaze, tight rhythms, loose feel, and captivating vocals, their lead single ‘In Case You Get Lost’ gives you plenty to get lost in.
Sitting on top of a funk-infused, driving rhythm section supplied by percussionist Sam Conner – who is also credited with a fantastic keyboard part on the track as well – and bassist Jake Vidergar, is the exciting guitar balancing act from Trevor Soranno and Will Tackett. The pair are alternately delicate with their melodious and soulful playing and forceful, angular, and emphatic in the builds. At times, their playing can recall Carlotta Cosials of Hinds, Courtney Barnett’s best solos, and, at moments, Nick Valensi’s cross-rhythm-lead playing style.
Supported by the sumptuous backing harmonies, it’s singer Anna Agrawal who steals the show, though, with a powerful lead vocal that dazzles throughout and captivates you with depth, strength, control, and dynamism.
From Smokey Robinson or The Temptations and the Four Tops to The Stooges and Brownsville Station, The White Stripes and Vulfpeck, Michigan has been a hotbed for great new noise and talented artists over the years. If their new single is anything to go by, Petalwave are ready to not only join this long list of notable names from The Great Lake State but to forge their own niche, sound, and path, as well.
