I came into “Sourgum” with plenty of curiosity, being unfamiliar with Olivia’s World and the Australian music scene as a whole. This is the first taste of “Greedy & gorgeous”, with the album dropping on March 14th. Another single, ‘Empresário’, dropped earlier this month as well, with more to come as they build towards the full release.
The song starts with a rousing uptempo blend of peppy power chords that throws the listener right in with little hesitation. Like the name of the song, the song’s lyrics reflect on an ill-fated romance that is at first covered with sugar but ultimately leaves a sour taste in the mouth. I felt transported back in time to the late 2000s, my ears doing kickflips to the Skate soundtrack as I bopped my head to the beat. A dizzying saxophone melody comes in at the latter half of the song, which surprisingly fits in perfectly with the song’s uplifting and feverish energy.
Alice writes that this was the first song she wrote for the album, and I found it to be a genuine delight. A potent mix of clever indie rock, it’s hard not to recommend giving this track a listen while keeping an eye out for the rest of the tunes to come.
