‘Was an atheist in college, then I watched some family die’
Heaven is a hot dog when you’re drunk as fuck
Heaven is a paid vacation
Heaven is a place where you never get stuck
In godforsaken conversations
Melanie MacLaren is a hardworking and prolific singer songwriter with a whole host of experience already under her belt. She peddles shamelessly rootsy indie folk, with just the right amount of twang and bite; the dry humour and morbid existentialism of her lyrics explain the deserved Dylan comparisons. It is a great feat that she can pull this off while maintaining instant listenability via doubtlessly catchy melodies. ‘Heaven Is’ attempts to grapple with death and all its trappings and ends with the mantra ‘still I’m so afraid to die’. Me too.
