This song sprang from a poem that was written by Lavender Blue (the artist also known as Ashville, North Carolina’s Kayla Beth Zuskin) after she suffered a nasty fall on her roller skates.
She contemplated the circular track that she had initially fallen over on, and how its shape mirrored the idea that people and their actions tend to be cyclical and patterned. And indeed, sometimes those cycles can result in painful incidents.
This concept is paired with a dreamy, ethereal, lo-fi sound reminiscent of The Sundays, Elliott Smith, Julian Wa, Mac DeMarco and select PJ Harvey demos to make something compelling and arresting.
Produced by frequent collaborator Landon George (who also provides vocals and contributes various instruments, along with Kayla) the duo spent a lot of time together on the evolution of the recording, running the whole piece through multiple cassette players at different rates to ultimately give the song its distinctive shimmery, warbly effect.
The album the track is taken from -The In Between – is released next month and available on cassette via Ghost Mountain Records.
