This writer is stoked to announce a new single from one of my favorites, H_ngm_n! Spotlight released earlier this month and it MAY be my number one at the moment…
Right from the jump we’re propelled into this life-giving, upbeat, and glistening guitar melody. The drums and guitar riffs make me immediately hyped and remind me of a fun high school hang-out with friends, blasting music and screaming along without a care in the world. Those early 2010’s vibes were IMMACULATE as a teen (especially in the music scene).
These lyrics speak to me so directly, “I’ve lost count of the days I’ve spent trying to find something to make me feel all better. I keep losing my way and all I want is to be so sure that any of this will matter.” As someone eliminating negative and easy coping mechanisms one by one, I’m also trying to stop constantly searching for a quick fix. The truly “feel good” feelings come in long-term patterns rather than instant gratification, and in our current world, that can be a hard pill to swallow and even more difficult to stick to.
The unknown of our efforts turning into something that bears fruit is one of the biggest reasons we don’t always put in 100% effort into everything we do. We’re so scared of the possibility that we’ll end up with nothing to show for that time and energy. That warped perception of failure makes us self-sabotage before we’ve even started!
Getting to the place where we enjoy the “doing” without an expectation for the end result is a TOUGH mountain to climb, but it’s where the best art is made and the most authentic version of you can come out to play. H_ngm_n is a great example of putting your heart and soul into your art and reaping the benefits of it with a killer tune and a growing fanbase!
We obviously have a limited amount of time in this life, but doing everything you can to ENJOY that time is the key to living without regret. Spotlight has these shiny chord progressions that make me feel introspective, but not in a gloomy or doomsday way. This band has mastered making introspection feel hopeful and warm through their music, which is one of the many reasons I dig them so much.
