With an atmospheric start with instrumentation that brings to mind the work of Bon Iver, “Silhouette (For A Film)” immediately commands your attention.
There’s also a bit of an Iron & Wine vibe here. The tried-and-tested acoustic, modern folky songwriting style is paired with large luscious bass tones and eventually the subtle addition of further instruments which gives the song a sense of gorgeous organic growth. It doesn’t deviate much stylistically, but it doesn’t need to. The formula works wonderfully. Daniel expertly paints a vivid picture with a palette of words and sounds, with a touch of his native accent coming through throughout.
This version is a re-work of a song that was originally released in 2022. This new version was created for an indie short film directed by up and coming Czech director Kateřina Hroníková entitled “Shedding the Mist”. Living in an anti-utopian society comes with a constant threat of losing one’s sight. Johana and Ivo, a couple in love, face the looming punishment of a lifetime of blurred vision for allegedly breaking the laws of the current regime. This imaginative sci-fi explores what it would be like if our ability to see was tightly controlled. You can view the film online for free, here.
This new interpretation is followed by the original version of “Silhouette”. With a much more traditional folk sound, it has a somewhat lighter, whimsical quality to it (perhaps down to slightly faster tempo and the inclusion of the background sound of children playing). Just as charming as the (For A Film) version but in an entirely different way, this is not an either/or situation – with each version taking on a life of it’s own and offering something the other doesn’t. A truly beautiful pairing.
