Single: Brightr – Charles Petrescu

Brightr is an emo pop punk project based out of the United Kingdom with a sound reminiscent of the early 2000s. The project shows a mix of moody lyrics with bright and catchy melodies and hooks, setting up a contrast between tones. They have previously released an album titled Year One and plan to follow this up with the aptly titled Year Two.

The upcoming album’s first single, titled  “Charles Petrescu” features an up-tempo acoustic emo pop sound continuing with their style of moody lyrics. The song opens up with the lyrics, “Remember when you used to feel some hope? Well now you don’t,” perfectly exemplifying their use of dark lyrics contrasted by a bright delivery of the lines. The vocals somewhat remind me of Ben Bruce from Asking Alexandria, particularly on the solo acoustic version of their song “Someone Somewhere” and this added to my enjoyment of the song. The song also features some harmonies that reminded me of bands such as Taking Back Sunday and if you like bands of that style, I would definitely recommend this song to you! Finally, I was impressed by the midwest emo-style guitar licks that kick in around the chorus of the song and serve as a hook that stuck with me after I first listened to the song.
