Single: Aiden Gore – Phantasmagoria

Phantasmagoria – the recent single from Germany’s Aiden Gore, is a touching, tender, acoustic piece, full of subtle tones and delicate nuances. It’s almost feather-light in its softness.

At least, that’s what it wants you to think. It lulls you into a false sense of security – you think you know where you’re at and what the song is about – and then it hits you. A, couple of lone, prominent notes, and then, as if conjured by Satan himself, an absolute wall of noise, brief, immediate and abrasive. And then, as suddenly and as unexpectedly as it came, it’s gone. A bit like a phantasmagoria.

And just like that, we’re back to the acoustic motif and again, we feel safe, serene and secure. Although now the softness is backed with something a little more robust as those lone notes return throughout the melody now and in doing so they prop the whole thing up. Support its weightlessness so that it feels a little more rigid, and then it hits you again. That deep, dark, gothic wall. Hit’s you right in your soul. And then it’s gone and so is the song.

It’s a bit of a phenomenon, this song. In the words of the artist himself, it’s “a song about madness, heartbreak and the deep dark forest” – you can definitely tell.
