Futures is the debut EP from Peira Moinester. We say debut, but actually, Peira is a seasoned pro. In the past she has played in bands, been on tours and put out records. It’s just that nowadays, her creative output looks a little different.
Like many of us, Moinester has written songs basically all her life. From grade school all the way up to the present day. From documenting teenage angst to finding fleeting moments in between the all-consuming mammoth tasks of running a business (music school Brooklyn Music Factory) and the duties of Motherhood. And therein lies the catch.
Finding time to express herself creatively was an afterthought for Peira for the longest time, however during the COVID pandemic, a curious thing happened. She explains – “When the pandemic happened, like all locked-in parents, I searched for a morsel of space that I could call my own. We had a small home music studio setup, but it was more of a place I went to secretly eat a bowl of ice cream.”
These bowls of ice cream eventually turned into picking up the guitar again and picking up the guitar again turned into an EP of new music – recorded entirely after bedtime.
The resulting EP – Futures – is a wonderfully expressive and expansive five-part opus. Musically we’re mostly in 90s female-fronted indie/alt-rock territory. We’re reminded of bands like Lush, Belly and Juliana Hatfield. But there’s also an added melodic shoegazey/indie twist. There are also elements of bands like Death Cab For Cutie, Snow Patrol, Sucre and Warpaint.
She wrote an article for a website about finding the time for creativity as a parent that is well worth a read. You can find it here.
We’re really glad that Peira eventually found the time to get back to what she’s A) obviously very good at and B) clearly in love with. We wouldn’t have this music if that wasn’t the case and that would be a travesty.
