EP: Mascot Graveyard – Maybe, Later

We are excited to introduce our second featured band from the vibrant emo scene in Brighton on our blog. After being thoroughly captivated by the first band we covered, prom, I was eager to dive deeper into this dynamic musical landscape. Enter Mascot Graveyard, a captivating quartet that began as a bedroom project and evolved into a full-fledged emo band.

Drawing inspiration from influential acts such as Touche Amore, Militarie Gun, and La Dispute, Mascot Graveyard has been diligently crafting their sound over the past few years. Their journey has included an array of live performances that have showcased their unique style and emotional depth.

Their debut single serves as a tantalizing glimpse into their artistic vision and the sonic experiences they aim to create. The band has graciously provided some insight into one of the standout tracks from their release, discussing the creative process and the intricacies of recording. Fans of the genre can look forward to the raw energy and heartfelt storytelling that Mascot Graveyard promises to deliver.

“Maybe, Later was recorded with Tidal Wave Recordings in Brighton over 2 days in August of 2024 & was our first time recording together as a band, being able to hear these songs in a new light really got us excited to record more & Sam & Alessandro at Tidal Wave were amazing to work with & really helped highlight our strengths & improve on things we’re unsure about. The lyrics for “Caught Up in the Webbing” kind of came about when I was in a bit of a depressed state & not knowing why or how to deal with it, I’ve tended to notice one thing that always helps me nowadays is to take some time away from all the noise of life & center yourself in the things that matter most.”

Having experienced anxiety and depression in the past, I find a deep connection with the lyrics of many emo songs. Perhaps that’s why, over the past few months, I’ve been drawn to emo music more than ever before. While I was never a devoted fan of the genre, the emotional depth it offers is something that brings me immense joy and comfort during these times. The single Caught Up in the Webbing, in particular, resonates with me; as Mascot Graveyard’s music seems to capture exactly what I need to hear. I can’t help but belting out the lyrics at the top of my lungs, feeling every word echo the struggles and triumphs I’ve faced.

Why can’t I see
What’s wrong with me
It’s all the same
& I’m all to blame

The raw energy of punk blends seamlessly with deeply emotive lyrics, resulting in a sound that captures the essence of both the genre’s gritty authenticity and the ethereal qualities reminiscent of shoegaze. Mascot Graveyard offers a captivating mix of these elements, infused with the nostalgic twinkle of midwest emo vibes. They’ve truly created something special with their two singles, which serve as a powerful introduction to their artistry.

Each track is a bold statement that resonates with listeners, and I find myself eager to experience what they’ll produce next. I can already envision myself revisiting this debut release time and again, with aspirations to memorize the lyrics to the first song so I could sing along passionately during live shows (maybe one day). Just imagining being surrounded by other fans, voices rising in unison, fills me with excitement. I am incredibly grateful to this band for sharing their music with me, and I wholeheartedly look forward to witnessing the next chapter of their musical journey.
