EP: Hanemoon – Easy on the Wildlife

Hanemoon has just unveiled exciting news for fans: they are set to release their latest EP titled “Easy On The Wildlife” through Subjangle, the renowned janglepop label based in Pretoria, South Africa, known for their commitment to producing physical formats. This innovative collection features a total of five tracks in its digital release on streaming, while a limited edition CD and Bandcamp digital album will include an additional sixth track, making this edition a must-have fork your calendars for January 1, the official release date for the CD, but for those eager to dive in early, the EP is already available for streaming on Bandcamp. As a result, we’ve decided to delve into and review the complete EP to share our thoughts.

We have previously explored the bonus track featured in this EP, delving into its unique sound and thematic elements.

Here is a captivating excerpt from the press release announcing the launch of the new EP, along with the unveiling of its second single:

As known with Hans Forster (Seaside Stars / Man Behind Tree / The Sealevel) those songs are harmony centered, guitar driven and multivocal. Jangly fuzz meets power-pop aesthetic, as can be heard on the teaser for the EP, the single “They bring the war back home”, released in October. Also typically for Hanemoons records not everything here sounds jangly powerpop. “Underwater”, 2nd single announcing the EP release on November 24 (physical) /25 (digital), is slowly diving into Country-Folk melancholia, pushed on by the wonderfully slack drum playing of Forster’s longtime musical compagnion Endai Hudl.

“Easy On The Wildlife” is a mix of new and old but unreleased material. It follows the album “Rain or Shine” released on Jigsaw Records in March 2024.

The latest EP is a vibrant tapestry of genre influences, weaving together elements of fuzzy pop, classic jangle pop, and alt-country folk. It truly showcases the remarkable talent of Hans, known musically as Hanemoon. Each song not only highlights his exceptional songwriting abilities but also invites listeners to lose themselves in the enchanting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.

As I listen, I am captivated by the diverse moods this EP presents. It effortlessly transitions from upbeat tracks filled with energy and optimism to more reflective and melancholic ballads that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Hans demonstrates his prowess not only within the realm of jangle pop but also in his ability to seamlessly incorporate influences from various genres, ultimately crafting a spellbinding EP. This musical journey rewards attentive listening from beginning to end, revealing new layers with each play.

If you have less than 20 minutes to spare and are in the mood for genuinely enchanting music, I highly recommend giving this exquisite EP a listen. Its vibrant melodies and rich textures will captivate your heart, enchanting you. Those who appreciate the tangible charm of physical media should consider purchasing the CD to support the artist and the label behind this work. I wish this gem had been released on cassette; I would undoubtedly add it to my collection.
