It isn’t everyday that a double A-sided single works in tandem, as far as its emotional effect. Just coming out of the Queensland scene, jangle pop band The Somedays introduce themselves with songs that range from melancholic to uplifting. Play them back-to-back and they feel like moments to relax and possibly cry before getting up to smile at both your life and those within it.
I don’t know how things have been going for people individually this year, but regardless of what may be the case, the band allows us to sit down and just breathe for our sense of safety for a five-minute song named “If I Could Start This Year Again”. And they do it with a song that in its nature sounds mournful. Over guitars that sound like rays of sun peaking through the clouds, they invite you to “stop and think, take a moment to reflect/take a breath, slow your thoughts right down”. Regardless of whether or not you would feel like it is a good idea at a very tense time, it isn’t far from a great idea that could save a life. They further help with the thought: “If I could start this year again, I would”.
“Always On My Mind”, the second A-side, is more energetic, heartfelt, and even celebratory in a certain fashion. With cheery church organs, sunny guitars and lyrics that speak of love coming through like a rainbow in the sky, it is both the tissue and the hand that leads you down to an empty space in the room, in which you are encouraged to dance with someone or just smile at them.
If you are looking for songs that either offer warmth like a blanket or shines like a discoball, The Somedays has you covered either way. Take a listen to the new tracks below.
