A wash of thick guitars, a throbbing bassline and gently pounding drums, the new tune “live and breathe” from Irish multi-instrumentalist shy is a shimmering daydream of a song.
Very little is known about the artist apart from their nationality and the fact their music is made in a small home studio. Working on their art for the past three years and shrouded in as much mystery and ambiguity as they are guitar effects, the honeyed fruits of their labour is really all that matters.
Fortunately for us all, the song is a joy from start to finish. It builds organically over its shoegazey hazy four minutes, blooming slowly and aging gracefully.
A stark oxymoron of a song, it feels intimate, but at the same time widescreen and cinematic. It has a professional sheen as well as an undeniable DIY air and it comes across as accomplished and clever as well as a heartfelt labour of love.
Despite not knowing anything about its author, it feels easy to connect with and relate to them on a humane and emotional level.
The gently shifting rhythm of the bass guitar is a bold composition choice and adds a layer of intrigue to an already fascinating piece. Take a listen to “live and breathe” below.
