Single: Krooked Kings – Damage Control

The most recent single from the Utah-based five-piece known collectively as Krooked Kings is a soaring, anthemic, instantly memorable, and rather relatable song.

“Damage Control” is built on reflection. In the words of the band, it “sits in the uneasy space between regret and realization, reflecting on impulsive choices, miscommunication, and the emotional fallout that occurs when attempts to fix things come a little too late.”

“When I wake up, I’m embarrassed as hell”, sings lead singer Oli Martin. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there. But normally not to the extent where we feel the need to write a song about it. But write a song, Krooked Kings did, and it perfectly encapsulates the hazy fog of substance-driven questionable direction and regrettable decision making.

Stylistically, there are strong elements of Surfer Blood in the chorus, with the gentler verses reminiscent of Steve Lacy, Kamran Khan, and Rex Orange County.

There is more than a touch of The Strokes about the guitar tone in the short solo towards the end. All in all, it’s a formidable combo and bodes very well for their fourth album – In Another Life – that’s due out soon. Take a listen to “Damage Control” below:
