Single: margins – A Certain Light

If you’re a fan of alternative rock, post-hardcore, metal, and/or emo music, margins’ newest single “A Certain Light” might be what you’re looking for. Based in Houston, Texas, the band has a sound that might be of interest to fans of Movements, Casey, Pianos Become Teeth, and Have Mercy.

Besides being aurally pleasing, “A Certain Light” exudes passion. The rawness of the vocals really brings out the emotions of the lyrics, and it’s perfect for letting your feelings out. It’s definitely one of those songs where people just have to scream along to the lyrics, both when listening at home or at one of the band’s concerts. The use of muffled guitar chords to set up the powerful chorus really brings out the uniqueness of their sound.

Though the energy of the song is quite high almost for the entirety of its duration, which I personally see as a plus, the more traditionally “sung” parts showcase the grandness of ACL’s sound while still leaving enough for us to get pleasantly surprised when the screamed post-chorus sets in.

All in all, margins’ “A Certain Light” is a solid release from the Texan band — every instrument stands out while still complementing each other very well to form a cohesive sound that is incredibly powerful. The drums hit hard, the guitar adds a lot of flavour, the vocals are the core of the song’s feeling and message, and the bass holds it all together. Listening to this introduced me to margins’ distinct sound and definitely made me excited for their upcoming releases.
