A jangly, lo-fi odyssey of a song, Angel Eyes by Altoona, PA’s Trozzy takes elements of shoegaze and dresses them down, blending them with almost Nico-esque vocals to make something that sounds at the same time stoic and soaring.
The artist tells us this is a song about loss, but also about trying to distance yourself from it in order to protect your emotional state.
Musically, the song is made up of a collection of real instruments – the rhythm, lead and bass guitars, for example – as well as MIDI instruments, including the drums and synth pads. The combination works wonders and feels like one, living, breathing thing.
As the song enters its home stretch, we’re treated to the addition of what sounds like some slide guitar that really adds another dimension to this beautifully melancholic tune.
