Denver, Colorado’s Moodlighting have spent a lot of time in Los Angeles recently, and I feel like you can hear that.
As with releases from acts like Best Coast and Alvvays, there’s a summery, shiny feeling that comes through on “Minimum” that can only come from being in a bright place. On their first new music since 2022, there’s almost a Phil Spector 1960s girls group vibe here – maybe it’s the combination of the percussion and vocal layering? Whatever it is, it’s really quite beautiful and well realised.
“Chipmunk” builds on the sound of the previous track but is distinctly more twee-leaning than the last. It sounds like it could’ve been put out on Memphis Industries in the mid-to-late noughties. There’s an undeniable lo-fi charm to it and the earnestness of its execution and the Isobel Campbell-style vocal delivery will effortlessly have you under its spell by the time its 143 seconds have elapsed.
The future looks bright like the California sunshine for this 5 piece. It’s good to have them back.
