Album: Jonas Van den Bossche – Are You Free Now

Jonas Van den Bossche is a Belgian guitarist and drummer, now residing in the US, and this album is a set of guitar songs recorded by the artist at home, in the dining room, where they also host concerts, during the summer of 2023.

The interesting thing is that the album is out in Europe via “Almost Halloween Times Records”, and this is where we are actually now, yay. As for the physical release, there’s also a custom art for each individual tape.

Speaking about the sound, some songs sound like a nice and light-shining acoustic guitar adventure, some are meditative pieces, and some — are like a whole rock band playing: massive and full-sounding. The images vary from optimistic tunes to nostalgic strings, and from elevating melodies to ambient pieces or some sort of pop themes (e.g., the song “Far Away”).

As for songwriting, the artist mentions that most songs emerge organically and, as it seems, on their own. The musician also mentions the “sound of the 90s” as the inspo.

My point would be that this is an interesting selection of acoustic rock music with a little bit of autumn wizardly powers to it. Sometimes the tunes may remind me of Sonic Youth or Beck (who also has this “magic” sound sample in the track “Paper Tiger”, by the way). Also, the album art might look like it is someone holding a magic wand, so there are really some interesting conceptions and stories that can come to mind while listening to the music.

The artist has more new tracks to be released later, so my suggestion would be to follow the news.
