When I was a kid, I felt like life had a certain sort of magical luster to it. Everyday activities like walking to school and going grocery shopping with my family felt imbued with curiosity and importance. As a 30-something navigating the world, I sometimes feel a sense of exhaustion and weariness in its place. Today’s single “A Lifetime Ago” from SLEEP CLUB tackles this complex and deeply personal topic at an opportune time as the seasons start to shift from summer to autumn.
SLEEP CLUB is a solo project from Boulder-based musician Matt Jones, and he describes this song as “about growing up and life losing the shine and color of childhood”. The song has a dream-like quality to it, with vocals heavy on the reverb, almost like someone familiar is whispering to you across time and space. “Don’t you remember when we had it all / a lifetime ago… / Woah-oh”.
The production of this short track is lovely, with a warmth that plays well with the themes of the song. I found myself impressed by the latter half in particular, where additional harmonies create tension, almost as if the past and present were coming together. One can imagine their own personal montage passing by as the song fades away, leaving listeners left to wonder which of their own memories feel “a lifetime ago”. A solid listen that I would highly recommend to fans of shoegaze punk looking for a trip down memory lane.
