After a smattering of EP’s, a novella, and a debut full-length record, Philipp Spiegl returns to our ears with his first single of 2024.
‘Love Letters’, from the upcoming album of the same name, details the ups and downs of life, over a fuzzy, garage-style guitar. It is a surprisingly anthemic moment, even calling to mind some of the greats of the indie-sleeze movement. Spiegl’s voice is distorted to a great effect, paying clear homage to some favourites of the genre.
If ‘Love Letters’ is anything to go by, Philipp Spiegl’s upcoming record will be full of tributes to the indie guitar bands that make up so many musical influences of today’s artists. Despite not exactly reinventing the wheel with the track’s sound, Spiegl pulls it off flawlessly, with an aptitude and confidence you only get from being in love with what you do. Check out ‘Love Letters’, and keep your eyes out for the album.
