A pop song about – in the words of the artist – “realizing a person isn’t exactly how you thought and finally being able to get away from the toxic feelings associated with the relationship”.
We’ve all been there. We’ve all made mistakes or decisions that we wish we could have another go at, or, sometimes erase completely. It’s that level of relatability that holds this song together and makes it so easy to listen to and identify with.
Musically, it’s incredibly modern and zeitgeisty – auto-tuned vocals meld with sparse electronic fusion beats. Part light D&B, part alt pop, part electro, part alt R&B, it’s a mish-mash or hodge-podge of electronic styles smashed together to make something unique.
Lyrically, jshih (government name Jordan Shih) is absolutely cooking with gas. Lines like “my heart beats faster / filled with doubt / from ecstasy to enemies” convey his feelings with eloquent expertise and immense expression.
There’s a spiky hurt to the way the song is put together as well as a concurrent emotional vulnerability. In truth, we’re not sure we’ve ever heard music quite like it. This Orlando musician is clearly blazing a trail all his own.
